Integrating Holidays: Advent

Many Christians around the world celebrate Advent. It begins December the First. I have not been able to update the blog weekly like I have wanted to , but wanted to begin this Christmas Season with some ideas and websites your family can go to for writing, crafting, and reading ideas.

I really like the activities in the calendar.

Here is an idea I am using in my home this year. I took a shoe holder and will be using the pockets for the readings, candy, and activities. It is not what I want it to look like yet, but it is only December first. I am just proud I had it ready to go.

We just got done with our first activity: Make an ornament and give it to a neighbor.

She received her Bachelors in Education (K-8), Masters in Reading (K-12) from Bowling Green State University (Ohio), and Masters in Administration from University of Utah (Utah). Her second language and Minor was Spanish and she study abroad in Alacla, Spain. She taught in North Carolina for 3 years. Why integrate literacy?

Parent involvement in literacy has not changed, but the distractions in life have. With the amount of technology available to children and parents, time spent together is rare. These activities are simple, short, and easy to prepare for so that parents can feel apart of their child's literacy development. With time so short, integrating two activities together is a bonus. Uniting topics is a practical way to cover subjects a child needs to learn. After all, parental involvement in reading aloud does increase a child's love for literacy.
